Where to Play Free Games Online — No Downloads

"Free" and "no download" cover a lot of ground online. Here's how to tell the sites that mean it from the ones that don't.

How instant play works

Modern browsers run games natively — no plugin, no installer, no separate runtime. The game is just a page: it loads, it runs, and when you close the tab it's gone. That's why a browser game can start in the time a downloadable one takes to check for updates.

It also means nothing is written to your machine beyond ordinary browser storage for things like high scores and settings.

What a good site looks like

Games that start on the page you clicked, without a second 'download' step. No prompt to install anything, no request for an account before you can play, and no interstitial that has to be dismissed three times.

Working search and real categories matter more than they sound. A library you can't navigate is a library you'll use once.

Warning signs

Any free browser game that asks you to install an executable or a browser extension to continue is not a browser game. The same goes for sites that want payment details for something advertised as free.

Be sceptical of pages that push notifications before you've played anything, and of download buttons that outnumber the play button — both are usually there to serve something other than the game.
